Jack Solomons

As the name implies, Jack Solomons was one of London’s most famous promoters. During his illustrious career, he staged over 26 World and British title fights and was the only boxing promoter to bring Muhammad Ali to England.

Born into a family of fish traders, he became involved in the sport at an early age, and went on to run the Devonshire Club – a boxing venue for up-and-coming fighters – before venturing out on his own. He travelled the world to stage his own ring promotions and was renowned for his style and flair.

After the war, he moved his gym to 41 Great Windmill Street in Soho and was instrumental in bringing top American fighters to Britain. His heyday was in the 1950s, when he promoted a number of World and British title fights. In 1951, he staged the sensational middleweight championship match between Sugar Ray Robinson and Randy Turpin.

Aside from promoting a slew of fights, Solomons also introduced action to the public via his popular show Jack Solomons’ Scrapbook. He showed film of big fights and interviewed the boxers.

Among the most memorable events of his career was the July 1951 middleweight title fight between Robinson and Turpin, which saw a 33-1 underdog pull off a stunning upset to win the world crown. He was also behind a successful 1963 campaign to bring Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali) to England for the first time to challenge Henry Cooper for the World Heavyweight title.

The boxing aficionado’s former site, 41 Great Windmill Street, is now a speak easy bar named after him and encapsulates the spirit of Jack Solomons’ colourful world. The design takes a number of nods to Art Deco with pewter metal bar counters, shaded velvet furnishings and red leather walls atmospherically setting the scene.

Away from the glitz of Piccadilly Circus, this speak easy bar epitomises the old school glamour of the 1940s and 50s; offering high class cocktails with live music and a plush interior encapsulating a bygone era of opulent London clubs. With its discreet entrance, this venue harks back to a bygone era of Soho, where everyone from showgirls to boxers would relax after their respective performances.
