German Gymnasium
Located between Kings Cross and St Pancras railway stations, this former Grade II-listed gymnasium is now home to a range of cafes, restaurants and bars. It also has a number of private dining rooms, including the semi-private dining room, and outdoor terraces which are perfect for festive celebrations.
If you’re looking to spruce up your next corporate event, German Gymnasium may be the perfect venue for you. With a menu authored by German-born chef Bjoern Wassmuth, this restaurant is sure to impress. It’s been crowned the winner of the 2016 Restaurant & Bar Design Awards, which shines the spotlight on some of the world’s most beautiful spaces.
In Germany, the first year of gymnasium is usually the equivalent of a fourth grade in American schools. Students need to have a certain grade point average and a letter of recommendation from their primary school teacher before they can apply to gymnasium.
The curriculum is very similar to the one in a typical high school, but is more focused on subjects that would be considered vocational by a university (for example, physics, chemistry, biology). The selection of academic subjects, however, is not as diverse as in the US.
Admission to gymnasium is generally determined by a lottery, although some states allow it to be based on a letter of recommendation from the applicant’s primary school teacher or a particular GPA. Regardless of how the lottery is decided, some gymnasia have informal interviews with students and their parents to determine their suitability for the school.
There are also several gymnasia for mature students. These are typically for students who graduated from a school without receiving an Abitur, and offer them the chance to earn the Diplom (a diploma equivalent to an undergraduate degree). These schools are often called Abendgymnasium, Aufbaugymnasium or Wirtschaftsgymnasium.
